Back in the Cold

Back in the Cold

I just got out of the water and like always, it feels good even if my toes are still numb. This was my first session back in the waves at my hometown line-up after taking a 3 month sabbatical in the Caribbean. I have actually been back in town for almost a month, but it was hard to get inspired to paddle back out in the cold Southern California water, that is after surfing in the warm Caribbean water for the past 3 months. I think most surfers probably have the same issue when they get back to their cold water home break after taking a trip with warm skies and even warmer water. The longer that you spend in the tropics, the longer it takes you to get use to putting back on a wetsuit. Now let’s face it, wetsuits have come a long way in the past decade, but they still can’t cover up the fact that getting in and out of them in the cold is a pain, not to mention the immediate ice cream headache after your first couple of duck dives. This mind you, coming from a Southern California Surfer. I know that there are some of you reading this on the Nor Cal or even New York laughing your ass off wondering why someone from Southern California is complaining about the cold water.  I would have to agree with you, regardless this shouldn’t take away from the point that nothing beats warm water barrels.
